Athletes are divided into 4 divisions of disability, with a total of 12 functional sport classes based on the extent of the disability.
|Blind and visually impaired||Blind and visually impaired athletes ride on tandems, accompanied by sighted pilots.|
|Cerebral palsy||Athletes with cerebral palsy ride on bicycles or tricycles depending on their disability.|
|Amputees and other individuals with an apparent functional disability ride on bicycles, if necessary with approved adaptations.|
|Wheelchairs athletes ride on handbikes|
- More than 500 million people worldwide live with a disability. This represents about 10% of the world population.
- Para-cycling is the third most important sport at the Paralympic Games after athletics and swimming.
- Para-cycling has been governed by the UCI since 2007. The UCI is therefore one of the first International Federations to manage and develop a sport for both able-bodied athletes and athletes with a disability.
- In 2010, Baie-Comeau hosted the first major para-cycling competition in North America, UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships.
